Medical Transcriptionist

Responsibility: Includes the accurate and timely transcription of medico-legal dictation from Medical Examiners, Pathologists, and Pathology Residents. Sorts and files copies of transcribed reports and other case information; provides clerical support to the Records Section; and performs other clerical duties as requested.

Duties/Responsibilities: ? Transcribes and types medico-legal autopsy and external medical and related or similar medical reports from recorded dictation. ? Ensures the correct spelling of medical terms and other words, and correct punctuation and grammar in the transcribed reports. ? Makes report corrections as required and as requested by physicians. ? Prints and distributes transcribed documents for review and approval. ? Sorts and files reports and other case file information. ? Provides general clerical support to Records Section and Administration. ? Maintains a log of all transcribed dictation and related activities; submits log on a weekly basis to supervisor. ? Performs other duties as assigned.

Required Skills/Abilities:
? Ability to type 60 wpm.
? Must possess thorough knowledge of medical terminology.
? Good knowledge of spelling and grammar.
? Skilled in the use of personal computers and standard office equipment (e.g., typewriters, calculators).
? Ability to communicate well and work cooperatively with peers and senior staff.
? Ability to establish work priorities and work with limited supervision.
? Ability to keep accurate records.
? Knowledge of chemical and biological safe handling procedures.

Education and Experience:

Graduation from an accredited high school/GED program. Two (2) years of clerical work related experience, plus one year experience in a clerical medical environment or 30 hours of college or a combination of the two.

Physical Requirements:

Normal office environment, but routinely has potential exposure to biological and/or chemical hazards; required to follow good laboratory practices and safety precautions including the use of personal protective equipment as required. Must possess manual dexterity, physical mobility, and visual and hearing acuity sufficient to perform essential job tasks; some moderate lifting (files) is required.
