About the position

As a proofreader for the Division of Legislative Services, you will play a crucial role in ensuring the accuracy and clarity of legislative drafts. Your primary responsibility will be to identify and correct grammatical, typographical, and compositional errors in these documents. This includes correcting grammar, punctuation, spelling, and content errors quickly and accurately while adhering to the Code of Virginia's style and established guidelines. You will also be expected to maintain a high level of consistency throughout the documents you review. In addition to proofreading, you may be assigned additional tasks as needed, which could involve collaborating with other team members to enhance the quality of legislative materials. The position is designed for individuals who are detail-oriented and possess a high degree of accuracy in their work. You will need to have a strong understanding of the differences between editing and rewriting, as well as the ability to learn the specifics of legislative editing. Excellent interpersonal, organizational, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills are essential, as is a positive and enthusiastic attitude. You will be expected to work diligently, both independently and collaboratively, and to communicate effectively in both written and verbal forms. The role also requires proficiency in Microsoft Office programs and a general technical savvy to navigate various tools and platforms effectively. This is a contract position with a defined start and end date, specifically designed to support the legislative process during the busy months of October 2024 through February 2025. The position allows for remote work, providing flexibility to work from home and in the office as needed.
