Your Role and Responsibilities
IBM Research - Almaden is looking for a someone who is interested in big data research. The candidate will work on improvements in database capabilities as well as advanced AI-based analytics of the extracted data. This research and development will directly impact our CIRCA platform, which enables materials and drug discovery by advanced search capabilities, including complex queries, boolean searches, proximity and similarity searches, batch searches as well as chemical, gene and target searches.

We are seeking a motivated and experienced candidate who is interested in joining our multi-disciplinary research team. The candidate should have a proven background in Linux shell programming, SQL, Python, Java and Javascript. As part of this background, it is advantageous if the candidate has experience in database administration, Apache SOLR/Lucene text index creation, regex, chemical informatics, chemistry, and in particular polymer chemistry.

This position requires frequent collaboration with computer scientists, chemists and materials scientists across different departments. As such, the candidate should have proven written and oral communication skills and demonstrated success in team-based projects. The student will gain experience in chemical informatics and learn about SMILES strings, InChIs, RDkit and other chemical data toolkits, FASTA and BLAST. Additionally, the candidate will improve their knowledge in dataset cleansing and preparation and practice to extract, transform and load (ETL) XML, JSON and other data file formats.

Candidates should have earned a B.S. degree in Chemistry, Materials Science/Engineering, Computer Science, or a related field.

? At Least 1 year experience in Linux Shell

Preferred Professional and Technical Expertise
? At least 1 year experience in Cheminformatics
? At Least 1 year experience in machine learning
? At least 1 year experience in Natural language processing
? At Least 1 year experience in Java Script
