Florida A&M University's Department of Campus Safety and Security (DCSS) is pleased to announce the acceptance of qualified applications for a Law Enforcement Officer vacancy. The Florida A&M University DCSS is the first and the only historically black college and university (HBCU) law enforcement agency to be accredited by three separate law enforcement accrediting bodies: the Commission for Florida Law Enforcement Accreditation, Inc. (CFA), the International Association of Campus Law Enforcement Accreditation (IACLEA), and the Commission on Accreditation for Law Enforcement Agencies Inc. (CALEA).

Responsibilities

Every member within the agency will strive to provide excellent police services to all students, faculty/staff, visitors, and merchants of the FAMU community; Committing to the concept of inclusion and community-oriented policing when carrying out assigned duties and responsibilities, in a concerted effort to enhance campus safety and security for all who come upon the FAMU grounds. Officers provide for public safety by maintaining order, responding to emergencies, protecting people and property, enforcing motor vehicle and criminal laws, and promoting good community relations. This is law enforcement work supervising law enforcement officers.

While performing the duties of a law enforcement officer, tasks involve the intermittent performance of extremely physically demanding work, typically involving some combination of reaching, bending, stooping, kneeling, crouching, running and climbing; The duties of a LEO may also involve the lifting, carrying, pushing, and/or pulling of heavy objects and/or people, such as in the event of chasing and/or subduing a suspect(s) resisting arrest; Some tasks are performed with the potential for intermittent exposure to disagreeable elements, including but not limited to heat, humidity, inclement weather, loud noises, toxic/chemical agents, electrical currents, violent behavior, weapons, explosives, traffic, and animals; Tasks include working around moving parts, vehicles, equipment, golf carts, ATV's and material handling, where extremely heightened awareness to surroundings and environment is essential in the preservation of life and property; and standard body gear and equipment applies in the preservation of life and property, as does special equipment based on assignment, including but not limited to various types of body armor and safety gear.

Patrol the university in a mobile unit or by foot patrol to prevent and/or reduce criminal activity, preserve the peace and apprehend offenders; Respond to emergency and non-emergency situations; Conducts preliminary investigation of crimes and attempted crimes; Conducts searches and seizures; Locates and preserves evidence and crime scenes; Prepares reports; Executes arrests when necessary; Patrol the university to prevent property loss due to fire or flooding; and render aid to accident victims and other persons requiring first aid for physical injuries.

Conduct traffic crash investigations, prepare reports utilizing Traffic and Criminal Software (TRACS) and submits finding to supervisor; Photograph or draw diagram{s) or crime or accident scenes and interviews principals and eyewitnesses; Monitor traffic to ensure motorists observe traffic regulations and exhibit safe driving procedures; Patrol university streets for traffic violations; Issues uniform citations to traffic violators; Control traffic congestion; Monitor and directs traffic and parking activity for events on campus; and, provide assistance to other law enforcement agencies by identifying/locating suspects who may be students or employees of the university, executing warrants/arrests, recovering stolen property, etc.

Maintain proficiency in the daily operation of the Computer Aided Dispatch (CAD), ensuring that all reports are complete with required documentation and submitted as required before end of tour of duty. Inspect and maintain departmental equipment in good working order, i.e., service weapons, vehicles, uniforms, leather gear handcuffs, badges, personal protection equipment, etc.

Communicate with the public to gain their confidence and to enhance crime prevention and law enforcement efforts. Keep abreast of university policies, rules & regulations (to include student codes), current statutes, law updates, standard operating procedures and/or departmental general orders to promote efficiency, effectiveness, and compliance in the performance of duties, special tasks and assignments, as well as perform other related duties as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Must meet the requirements for Chapter 943, Florida Statutes. Must have one year of work experience and a valid driver's license.

Recommended Competencies

Knowledge of law enforcement principles and techniques, criminal justice system, crime prevention and control procedures, and arrest procedures;

Knowledge of university policies, rules & regulations (to include student codes), current statutes, law updates, standard operating procedures and/or departmental general orders;

Skill in using restraining devices;

Skill and ability to qualify annually on firearms;

Skill and ability to safely operate a motor vehicle, in emergency and non-emergency situations;

Ability to work in dangerous and stressful situations;

Ability to understand and apply laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures;

Ability to effectively apply emergency medical care techniques;

Ability to determine work priorities and complete work assignments;

Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing; and,

Ability to follow oral and written directives.

Anticipated Salary Range

Starting salary is $60,000.00.

Licenses and Certifications

Must be in possession of Florida Law Enforcement Certification.

Pay Plan

This is an USPS (University Support Personnel System) position.

Conditions of Employment

Successful candidate is subject to a pre-employment screening which includes a review of criminal records, reference checks and verification of education. Schedule

Law Enforcement Officers are expected and required to fulfill the duties and responsibilities assigned until fully completed through 80-hour biweekly pay period consisting of six (6) 12-hour workdays and one (1) 8-hour day depending upon the needs of the department. Shifts may be changed.
