About the position

The Meter Reader position at the City of Perry is a responsible semi-skilled role that involves both fieldwork and office tasks. The primary responsibility of the Meter Reader is to accurately read, record, and maintain meter services for the city utility system. This position requires the employee to maintain precise records and files of utility accounts, ensuring that all data is up-to-date and accurate. The Meter Reader will be responsible for cleaning, testing, repairing, and maintaining utility meters, as well as managing the commencement and discontinuance of service for city utility customers. In this role, the employee will follow a designated route, receiving specific oral or written instructions regarding their daily tasks. It is essential for the Meter Reader to exercise considerable tact, judgment, and courtesy when dealing with customers, as they will often be the face of the utility service. The position may also require the employee to perform periodic standby for emergency calls and service after regular hours and on holidays, highlighting the need for flexibility and readiness to respond to urgent situations. The Meter Reader will utilize various meter reading devices to read city utility meters and record findings on their assigned route. They will keep detailed records of meters read and report any meters that are not accessible for reading. Additionally, the employee will be responsible for turning utilities on and off for customers moving in or out, as well as for nonpayment of bills. The role also involves reading, recording, and reporting meter readings for final billings and addressing any customer complaints or issues related to service connections. Furthermore, the Meter Reader will be tasked with investigating suspected cases of meter tampering and resolving a variety of customer complaints. This includes testing, cleaning, repairing, calibrating, and rebuilding meters, as well as testing new meters for accuracy. The employee will operate various specialized testing and repair equipment and maintain records of all meters tested and repaired. Lastly, the Meter Reader is expected to keep their assigned city vehicle in good working condition, checking and filling it with gas and oil as necessary, and performing other job-related duties as required.

Requirements
? High School Diploma or equivalent.

? Preferred: Water Distribution System license, minimum 'class 3'.

? Must obtain a Water Distribution System 'class 3' license within 6 months of employment.
